CASII STEPHAN & THE MIDNIGHT SUN
Casii Stephan has a “powerful, versatile voice and a fascination with ‘the challenge of writing a hook that will get stuck in people’s heads.”’ (Tulsa People) Stephan has been compared to Florence Welch, Fiona Apple, and Carole King, as her vocal timbre possesses a full and warm quality. Her subtle vibrato notes and rollercoaster-like melodies immediate grab the listener and her emotional lyrics share intimate stories. Stephan’s voice is fierce and fearless, but this was not always the case. She grew up shy and afraid of her voice until she started writing songs on the family piano in South St. Paul when she was 16. In music, she discovered something extraordinary that allowed her to transcend everyday life and find a deeper sense of self.
Stephan moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2014 with the intent to give up her pursuit of a music career. However, in 2016, she released a single, “I Like The Way,” which won an Independent Music Award for “Best Love Song.” In early 2017, she was named “One of nine Oklahoma musicians to watch” by the Tulsa World Magazine. That year proved to be an exciting and successful year. She, along with her band, The Midnight Sun performed an official SXSW Showcase opening for Hanson, performed at MisFEST (short for Music is She), Tulsa’s first female-driven music festival that Casii helped to found and produce, and released a new single, “GhostShips”.
“GhostShips” premiered on Atwood Magazine where Casii was described as “ascending to center stage with an incredibly dynamic performance that captures an intimate moment of raw, untethered emotion”. This single received a genre nomination in the Pop category from the Hollywood Music in Media Awards and received an Honorable Mention Award by the USA Songwriting Competition.
In 2018, Stephan released “Letters”, her first fully self-produced single it received accolades from idobi radio, B Sides and Badlands, Tulsa World, Tulsa People, and more. The official music video of “stunning visuals” to this “driving track” was recently premiered by Substream Magazine. “Letters” is Stephan’s foot-stomping, hand-clapping response to the frustration of dating in the digital age. “It’s difficult having a lot of small talk, trying to connect with someone, but nothing happens,” explains Stephan. “Instead you get hellos, silence, and ghosting. Some days a meaningful conversation with someone of the opposite sex feels like a dream. So, with the hope that maybe one day that will change, I just keep writing letters…” Stephan called on an all-Tulsa-based crew to help produce and mix the fiery track, paying homage to her community.
In 2019, Casii Stephan and The Midnight Sun performed an official SXSW music showcase in Austin, TX as a part of the Tulsa Music Showcase. Her performance received recognition from American Songwriter as a “knock out set of blues-funk soul” and At Large Magazine raves about her “dynamically talented” band that “augments yet never overwhelms her vocals” and “play off of each other like a band that’s been together for years not just a year”. Casii was recently nominated for another Independent Music Award for “Best Acoustic song” with her Jan 2018 release of “When Winter Comes-Live”, her intimate song she wrote in response to the fear of aging. She has been invited to perform a showcase during the Independent Music Awards Music Conference as well as participate in a panel at Paramount Hotel in New York City in late June along with this nomination.
After her New York trip, Stephan plans to record a new single and music video with hopes of completing an album by the end of 2019. She will also be performing with her band at music festivals both in Tulsa and out of state, so keep a look out for tour dates.
